Scottie Scheffler wins third consecutive PGA Tour Player of the Year award

Scottie Scheffler won his third consecutive PGA Tour Player of the Year award, the PGA Tour announced Tuesday, adding to the legend of the World No. 1 golfer. The 2024 FedEx Cup champion is the first player since Tiger Woods to win Player of the Year honors in three consecutive seasons.

“On behalf of the PGA TOUR, congratulations to Scottie Scheffler on a truly historic season, capped off with his first FedExCup title and today a third consecutive Jack Nicklaus Award as PGA TOUR Player of the Year,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement. “Scottie took on challenges from the best players in the world on the biggest stages all season, and being honored as PGA TOUR Player of the Year is the ultimate sign of respect from his peers.”

Scheffler received 91 percent of the vote for the award and was selected over two other nominees: Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy.

Scheffler’s season highlights included winning the FedExCup, his second Masters Tournament and gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He recorded seven tournament wins, the first time a player has done so in a single season since Woods in 2007. He achieved a Tour-best 16 top-10 finishes and did not miss a cut all season.

Amid his season of highs, Scheffler was also at the center of the most shocking day in golf major championship history when he was arrested and booked in a Louisville, Ky. jail over a traffic miscommunication at the PGA Championship. Authorities released Scheffer in time to tee off for the second round, where he shot a 66 to finish just two behind the leaders amid the day’s chaos.

Scheffler would go on to finish the PGA Championship tied for eighth, and Jefferson County prosecutors later dropped the charges against him.

In September, Scheffler captured the FedEx Cup with a 4-under 67 for a four-shot victory over Collin Morikawa at the Tour Championship. He earned a $25 million FedEx bonus, which, combined with his 2024 on-course earnings (a record $29.2 million) and an $8-million Comcast Business Top 10 bonus, tallied $62.2 million for the season.

Told after the Tour Championship that his seven PGA Tour wins were the most since Tiger Woods in 2007, Scheffler tried to sum it all up.

“I’m proud of the work we put in,” he said. “It’s hard to put into words what this year has been like for me. Pretty emotional. There’s a lot of stuff that’s gone on outside of golf. It’s been a wild year.”
