Eddie Howe insisted Miguel Almiron missed Newcastle United’s FA Cup victory at Fulham through illness amid transfer speculation over the Paraguayan’s future.

The Newcastle boss said after the two-goal win at Craven Cottage that Almiron “has a genuine illness” and insisted he would like to keep the player in his squad.

When asked if there was transfer interest in Almiron, 29, this January, Howe responded: “It’s difficult because I’m not in daily or hourly contact with what’s going on and I’m sort of a step removed from everything.

“There’s a possibility that someone could leave before the window shuts, I don’t think that’s changed but we will have to wait and see what happens.”

Howe — whose side booked their place in the FA Cup Fifth Rounds thanks to goals from Sean Longstaff and Dan Burn against Fulham — added of Almiron: “Miggy has been so important to us. Last year he was a big goal getter for us.

“This year he’s worked incredibly hard and been reliable for us.

“He’s always been fit and hasn’t missed many games and that’s been vitally important to us when we’ve had some many injuries to our attacking players.

“He’s not underestimated by me in terms of his personality and what he produces on the pitch so of course I would like to keep him.”

Almiron joined Newcastle from MLS side Atlanta United in January 2019 and has gone on to make 195 appearances for the club, scoring 30 goals.

His most prolific campaign came in the 2022-23 season, when his 11 Premier League goals helped secure a top four finish for Newcastle and a return to the Champions League following a two-decade absence.

The attacking midfielder won Premier League Player of the Month for October 2022, incorporating a run of six goals in six matches, and Premier League Goal of the Month for his first-half goal against Fulham.

Almiron scored Newcastle’s first Champions League goal in over 20 years, when he opened the scoring in a 4–1 win over Paris Saint-Germain — a game in which he was named Man of the Match.

He has been capped 53 times by Paraguay, netting seven goals.
