Ruben Amorim has said Mason Mount will be in Manchester United’s matchday squad for Sunday’s trip to Leicester City while Kobbie Mainoo is “a few weeks away” from a return.
Mount returned to United team training this week after three months out with a hamstring injury suffered against Manchester City on December 15.
The 26-year-old has started just nine of a possible 66 Premier League matches since moving to Old Trafford from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 due to a series of fitness setbacks.
“I think he is going to the bench,” Amorim said ahead of Sunday’s match at Leicester. “We need every player and if he’s fit I’m going to take him. He cannot play too many minutes, but just five minutes of Mason Mount is perfect.”
The United head coach added he “really, really loves” Mount and said: “I know how he does everything right. He eats right, his physical aspect is perfect. He’s trying so hard.
“Maybe he’s thinking too much about everything. He was European champion (with Chelsea). He is a really talented player. And when the player does everything like he does, he will always have the support of everybody here in the club.”
Amorim added Mainoo, who has not played since February 7 due to an injury suffered in training, will “maybe will return in a few weeks”.
Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte are two others who may be in the frame for returns against Leicester, with Amorim saying that both were “not risked” in Thursday’s victory over Real Sociedad having missed the last night fortnight but spoke of the importance of rotations ahead of the return to Premier League action.
