Manchester United's Amad Diallo withdraws from Ivory Coast squad with illness

Manchester United forward Amad Diallo has withdrawn from the Ivory Coast squad for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers due to illness.

The 22-year-old winger was selected for his country’s home and away double header against Sierra Leone, but will now return to United’s Carrington training ground for further assessment.

Diallo becomes the fourth United player to withdraw from international duty after Noussair Mazraoui, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

Midfield duo Garnacho and Mainoo have both been managing long-standing issues, while summer signing Mazraoui was forced off at half-time in United’s goalless draw at Aston Villa on Sunday.

Harry Maguire, meanwhile, faces a few weeks on the sidelines after picking up an injury in the stalemate at Villa Park and was subsequently left out of interim head coach Lee Carsley’s latest squad.

Diallo has played a significant role for United this season, scoring one goal and adding another assist in six Premier League appearances.

Reigning AFCON champions Ivory Coast are top of qualification Group F having taken 10 points from their opening four games.

Diallo has four caps at senior level having made his international debut in 2021.
