Colorado football coach Deion Sanders can add Jay Norvell to his list of detractors, as the Colorado State coach criticized Sanders’ proclivity for appearing in news conferences wearing a hat and sunglasses.
“I sat down with ESPN today. I don’t care if they hear it in Boulder. I told them, I took my hat off and I took my glasses off,” Norvell said on his Wednesday night radio show. “I said when I talk to grown-ups, I take my hat off and my glasses off. That’s what my mother taught me.”

Norvell’s Rams take on Colorado on Saturday for a rivalry game between the two schools for the first time since 2019, and if ESPN’s “College Gameday” and Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff ” being in town wasn’t enough juice for the rivalry’s renewal, Norvell added a bit more.
Sanders has made a habit throughout his coaching career of conducting news conferences wearing sunglasses, hoodies and hats. He’s also made a habit of utilizing any and all disrespect — perceived or real — to motivate his team.
Norvell joins Oklahoma’s Brent Venables and Pitt’s Pat Narduzzi as major college coaches who verbally sparred with Sanders, whose Colorado team upset TCU as a 20-point underdog in its season opener and routed rival Nebraska 36-14 in Week 2.
Saturday’s game between Colorado and Colorado State will kick off at 10 p.m. ET in Boulder.
