Erling Haaland to be assessed after picking up 'knocks' in Manchester City draw at Newcastle

Pep Guardiola says Erling Haaland will be assessed in the coming days after picking up “knocks” during Manchester City’s 1-1 draw at Newcastle United on Saturday.

The 24-year-old striker failed to score in a Premier League game for the first time this season as Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon netted a second-half penalty to cancel out Josko Gvardiol’s 35th-minute opener.

Haaland consulted with City medical staff during the celebrations to Gvardiol’s goal before continuing and finishing the game.

City take on Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League on Tuesday and Guardiola said a decision on Haaland’s availability for the trip to Slovakia will be made pending further assessment.

“(He) has some knocks. We’ll see in the next few days,” Guardiola told reporters after the game.

Haaland was making his first appearance since City salvaged a draw in an ill-tempered draw with Arsenal last weekend.

The forward escaped disciplinary action despite throwing the ball at the back of Gabriel’s head after John Stones’ late equaliser.

Haaland had earlier put City in front with his 100th goal for the club, bringing up the milestone in his 105th appearance for the club since signing from Borussia Dortmund in 2022.

It takes Haaland’s career goal tally to 235 across spells at Molde, Red Bull Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and City. At international level, he has scored 32 times in 35 appearances for Norway.
