Chelsea reach agreement with Sporting to sign winger Geovany Quenda

Chelsea have reached an agreement with Sporting CP to sign winger Geovany Quenda.

The 17-year-old will remain at the Portuguese club next season and then move to Stamford Bridge in July 2026.

A seven-year contract until 2033, with an option to extend by 12 months, is in place.

The fee is in the region of €45-50million; not far off what Manchester United were aiming to pay when exploring a deal for Quenda in January.

A medical has been completed for the Portugal Under-21 international, who will feature prominently for Sporting in the 2025-26 campaign.

United had also held an interest in recruiting Quenda after he previously worked with their head coach Ruben Amorim.

Chelsea intend to deploy him as a pure winger given he is equally comfortable on either side, a position he has predominantly occupied since Amorim moved to Old Trafford.

He has made 43 appearances across all competitions this season, including 10 in the Champions League.

Chelsea are currently fourth in the Premier League and return to action on Sunday with a trip to Arsenal.

The latest Sporting graduate with a high ceiling

Quenda is the latest in the line of incredible talents to be nurtured by Sporting CP in Portugal, although he was signed from their rivals Benfica.

Having spent much of his youth career as a winger, he impressed at wing-back under Ruben Amorim early in the 2024-25 season before being restored to a wide role under Rui Borges.

Quenda is left-footed but has played on both flanks over the course of his career.

He frequently drops into half-spaces in the centre of the pitch too, making him a prospective fit for four out of the 10 outfield positions in a back-three system.

When deployed out wide, Quenda’s pace is his biggest strength as he can accelerate past defenders in the blink of an eye before either lifting or powering a cross into the box with equal threat.

Understandably, Quenda has gaps in his game. But given his other qualities at such a young age, Quenda is a player with a tremendously high ceiling.
