Manchester United dismiss Napoli transfer approach for Alejandro Garnacho

Napoli have approached Manchester United over the availability of Alejandro Garnacho, but the Italian club’s proposal is not being entertained at Old Trafford as things stand.

The Athletic reported on January 7 that United would reluctantly consider selling homegrown players, including Garnacho, in order to comply with financial rules. However, the club are not actively seeking to sell the forward, and the figures discussed so far by Napoli do not come close to the value that would prompt movement.

The Argentina international is a product of United’s academy, meaning any future sale would represent pure profit on the club’s balance sheet, while Napoli have identified the 20-year-old as a potential replacement for Kvara Kvaratskhelia.

On Saturday, Napoli head coach Antonio Conte said 23-year-old Kvaratskhelia had “asked the club to be sold” and the winger posted a video to his social media on Thursday in which he said it was “time to say goodbye” to the Italian club.

Garnacho is under contract at Old Trafford until 2028 having signed a new deal in 2023 but was omitted from Ruben Amorim’s squad for the win over Manchester City in December, along with Marcus Rashford.

He started 10 of United’s first 15 Premier League games this season and although he had been limited to four appearances since being dropped which all come off the bench, he has been named in the starting line-up for Thursday’s match against Southampton.

Garnacho has played 116 times for the Old Trafford club since making his first-team debut against Chelsea in 2022, scoring 23 goals.

Having made his senior international debut in 2023, he was part of the Argentina side that won the Copa America in 2024, playing 66 minutes in the country’s 2-0 win over Peru in his sole appearance at the tournament.
