The day that I first stumbled upon Tessa Bailey, I was in my favorite Boston bookstore, contemplating between a few romance titles with adorable cover art. I was comparing Goodreads reviews when a bookstore employee walked past me and, without even pausing to think, told me which one I needed to buy. I left with a copy of It Happened One Summer.
This one recommendation led me to find a new favorite romance author. Since that day, I’ve read 14 Tessa Bailey books—her love stories instantly suck me in, and when I pick one up, I know I’m not going to be able to tear myself away from the page. No two Tessa Bailey books are the same: the tropes, the characters, and even the sex scenes are all unique. Now, if someone else is looking for a book rec, my mind instantly goes to Tessa.
These days, Tessa Bailey is all over BookTok and Bookstagram for obvious reasons. Her love stories would make even the coldest heart swoon, and she writes incredibly passionate sex scenes. So, are Tessa Bailey’s books worth the hype? Read on to find out.
Why I love Tessa Bailey’s books
Unlike some other viral romance authors, in my opinion, Tessa Bailey has found the perfect combination of romance, comedy, and spice. There are scenes within her books that make me laugh out loud, some that make my heart ache, and others that I’ve definitely read to my husband as inspiration for our sex life.
I’m also a huge Tessa Bailey fan because the characters in her books are more complex than those in your average romance novel—mentally and emotionally, yes, but also sexually. We learn each character’s deepest secrets, family dynamics, traumas, strengths, kinks, and everything in between. We also watch the characters grow throughout each of her books. Obviously, we see them fall in love and have mind-blowing sex, much like any romance novel. However, we also get to see them grow in their careers, develop new relationships, and navigate real-life situations outside of the romance.
Not only are there complex and relatable characters throughout Tessa Bailey’s books, but the settings also add a certain level of charm to the plot. Although Bailey writes books set in real locations like Boston and Napa Valley, the communities built within the pages of her books give these cities new, community-focused personalities that take on lives of their own within the novels. If you’re like me, you may also find yourself wanting to book a trip after reading these books.
How spicy are Tessa Bailey’s books?
Tessa Bailey’s books aren’t the spiciest on the shelves, but the spice level is up there for a not-purely-smut romance. The tension between the characters is foreplay alone, and the sex scenes last a chapter or two. If I had to give Tessa Bailey’s books an overall spice rating, I would say her books hover around 3.75/5 spicy peppers. Her latest series, though? Those are her spiciest books yet.
Do you have to read Tessa Bailey’s books in order?
As a Tessa Bailey aficionado, I recommend choosing one series to start and reading those books in order of release. You won’t miss anything significant if you choose a Tessa Bailey book at random, but there are little details you’d only know if you read each series in chronological order. Each book within a series follows a romance between two main characters, but the books that come before and after are tied in by other plotlines and side character relationships. Here are the ones I’ve read and recommend:
- The ‘Bellinger Sisters’ series: These two books follow sisters Piper and Hannah Bellinger in the seaside town of Westport, Washington. The first book in this series is It Happened One Summer.
- The ‘Hot & Hammered’ series: This series is all about a family rivalry among home renovators in Port Jefferson, Long Island. The first book in this series is Fix Her Up.
- The ‘A Vine Mess’ series: These two books are about siblings Julian and Natalie Vos, who are both heirs to a massive fortune in Napa Valley, California. The first book in this series is Secretly Yours.
- The ‘Big Shots’ series: These three books are all focused on different professional athletes, set in several cities throughout the United States. The first book in this series is Fangirl Down.
Which Tessa Bailey books are the spiciest?
If you’re not interested in reading Tessa Bailey’s romances in order of publication date, you can read them in order of spiciness. There’s no shame in being in it for the sex scenes, and Bailey’s are some of the best of the current viral romance authors. Here are her books ranked in order of smuttiness, and rated on a scale of 1-5 chili peppers:
